Noting the art and design canon as an important reference point for upcoming artists, Michael examined how the lack of Black representation affected new generations of artists.
In BBC’s ‘Whoever Heard of A Black Artist?’ Sonia Boyce describes a particular phenomenon of “mass systemic amnesia” - the forgetting or not knowing of contributions of Black and Brown British artists before us. Inspired by this idea, Michael created a series of works to address this issue through two works: Through The Lens, an intergenerational series of conversations and mixed media portraits between Black British Photographers, and Reference Point, a short film exploring the relationship designers of the Diaspora have with Western references.
A short cut of Through The Lens, the accompanying portraits and Reference Point are currently on display in the Adobe Creative Artists on Display show the V&A Museum till November 2026.
